Local Habitat for Humanity celebrates fourteen families becoming Habitat Homeowners in Guelph community

Guelph, ON – June 15th was a great day for fourteen families who celebrated entering into homeownership with support from the community!  Habitat for Humanity Wellington Dufferin Guelph announces the completion of Block 2 and 3 at Cityview Village.

“Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting homeownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty”, says Steve Howard, CEO. “And we did just that on June 15th!”

Habitat for Humanity offers a zero down payment, interest-free mortgage. Mortgage payments are geared to income and are held by the local Affiliate. All partner families and individuals to contribute up to 500 hours of “sweat equity” by volunteering in areas such as construction, office work, special events and ReStore support.  Working together with staff and volunteers, the organization encourages the development of life and employment skills.

Sharron Riley-Persson, Director of Resource Development & Volunteer Services, added “The day was magical. Habitat hosted over 100 members of the community – partner families, volunteers, board members, corporate partners and major donors along with staff. Mayor Cam Guthrie, Lloyd Longfield, MPP and Mike Schreiner, MP all spoke powerful words congratulating the families and to the power of our local Habitat Affiliate and community supporters to make dreams come true!”.

The Key Dedication Celebration was filled with excitement and activities. There were recognition plaques unveiled with the Guelph & District Association of REALTORS®, and a tree planted honouring our volunteers who have been champions in this effort to support the completion of Block 2 and 3.

“The highlight of the Celebration, however, was the delivery of the keys to our fourteen families,” remarks Katherine Gibson, Board Chair. “The smiles and tears remind us of why this Habitat for Humanity Affiliate is so critical within our community”.
